Renewables lending and the merchant risk crucible
Lenders to renewable energy projects are finding their feet in the post-subsidy world, with corporate PPAs often providing a degree of revenue certainty. However, debt providers may also have to evolve their merchant lending strategies in the coming months to retain dealflow, at least while long-term offtake deals remain in short supply. That being said, there is a limit to how flexible the lending market should be expected to be, as seen with SSE’s initial attempt to up merchant exposure levels for its 1.075GW Seagreen offshore wind farm in UK waters in recent months
